Course Overview
Pearson BTEC Higher Nationals are professional, credit-based qualifications aligned to the Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF). They are designed to provide students with specialist vocational skills that are highly valued by global employers. Units (Curriculum Structure)
The BTEC Higher National programmes are structured to build foundational knowledge before moving into advanced management applications:
- Level 4 Higher National Certificate (HNC): Equivalent to the first year of a UK bachelor’s degree (120 credits). This stage consists of 6 mandatory units and 2 optional units worth 15 credits each.
- Level 5 Higher National Diploma (HND): Equivalent to the first two years of a UK bachelor’s degree (240 credits total). This includes 7 units at Level 5 (120 credits) and 8 units at Level 4 (120 credits).
- Core Subject Streams:
- Business
- IT & Computing: Including Cyber Security, Web Design, E-commerce, and Networking.
- Health and Social Care Management
Course Features
- Duration: 9–12 months per level (52 weeks).
- Skill Level: Level 4 (HNC): Year 1 University Equivalence.
Level 5 (HND): Year 2 University Equivalence. - Language: English language proficiency appropriate to the level of study (IELTS 5.5 or equivalent).
- Assessment Methodology: BTEC qualifications are 100% assessed through internally assessed assignments rather than traditional final examinations. Methods include:
- Written reports and reflective assignments.
- Presentations and practical projects.
- Portfolios of evidence.
Entry Requirements
Applicants must meet the following criteria to be admitted:
- Academic: A Level 3 qualification such as A-Levels, BTEC Level 3, or a recognized Access to HE Diploma.
- English Proficiency: IELTS 5.5 or equivalent.
- Professional Experience: Relevant work or professional experience where applicable.
- Prior Learning: Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) may be considered in line with Pearson guidance.
Progression Opportunities
Successful completion of your BTEC Higher National provides multiple routes for advancement:
